The Satellite rights of a movie is a larger game now for which producers get humongous amounts from leading TV channels. The TV channel not only buys the rights of a movie for telecast but also in return they give huge promotional campaigns before the release to provide a good start to the movie at the box office.
Tamil and Telugu cinema are like two sides of a coin. Kollywood usually makes films with more realistic approach, but Tollywood makes films with more commercial approach. Even after having 2nd highest tickets sales for films in India, Tollywood falls back in Satellite rights race with Kollywood.
Kollywood’s upcoming top star projects have sold their rights to leading channel Sun TV for Whopping amounts. Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Thalaivaa bought for Rs. 15 crores, Jilla – 18 crores, Ajith’s Veeram sold for 13 crores. Even rising star like Karthi films has crossed 10 crore marked, his film Biryani and All in All Azhaguraja bought for Rs. 11.5 crores each. In Tollywood Prince Mahesh Babu is the first actor to cross 10 crore barrier with his next film Sukumar Nenokkadine – 12.5 crores (Un Official). Powerstar star Pawan Kalyan next to Mahesh with his next film Atharintiki Daredhi – 9.5 crore (Official). Even after having high TRP values for Telugu films in repeat Telecast, Kollywood still holds the record in Satellite Rights department.
