It’s been a while since an established star from Tollywood has tried his hand in Bollywood. Mega Powerstar Ram Charan Teja who is running on two back to back commercial hits with Racha & Naayak is coming up with a Bollywood film Zanjeer, which is simultaneously shot in Telugu titled Thoofan. Priyanka Chopra, Sri Hari & Tanikella Bharini are playing important roles in Telugu version of this bilingual action entertainer. Zanjeer is biggest released film for any south Indian actor in India. Let’s check out more details in the review.

Story: A viciously honest cop Vijay Khanna (Ram Charan) lands in Mumbai after being transferred in Andhra Pradesh for 22 times in five year span. ACP Vijay Khanna is in a mission to control Oil mafia in Mumbai. NRI Mala (Priyanka Chopra) witnesses a murder Vijay is investigating and gets in between cop – mafia war. Seeing Vijay’s honesty Illegal cars dealer Sherkhan (Srihari) and crime reporter Jayadev (Tanikella Bharani) help Vijay in this mission. How did Vijay deracinate Teja’s mafia empire is follows through the rest of the plot.

Performances: Ram Charan is quite convincing as the police officer who has been through much misery. Prakash Raj, when he is seen in films as these, always displays a reticent calm on his performance, and it’s the same here as well. Priyanaka Chopra is awesome in her looks and okay in her small role. Mahi Gill is better in the songs than scenes, she munificently exposed her beauty. Director fails to establish Srihari’s character Sherkhan to the core. The rest of the cast is uncharismatic and do not come up with anything spectacular.

Pros:

Ram Charan Angry Young man looks in parts

Liberal Exposing by Models in Item numbers and Mahie Gill

Minus:

Script

Narration

Fights

Editing could have been crispier

Emotional bond missing between the characters

Songs & Lyrics

Technical Aspects: Thoofan a film that aspires to be a Action Thriller, and with its short running time of a couple of hours and a ten minutes more, it really had to get its steps right, if things were to go well. The four odd item songs that are hence jam-packed into the narrative look quite pointless; especially the second half songs that looks and sounds weird. Sweeping apart the songs, you twain yourself for the thrills that would hopefully follow, but they sadly never make an appearance. The twist and emotional aspects are nowhere to be seen, and before long you realize that this isn’t the film you have expected it to be a perfect remake of classic film Zanjeer. The script of the film is absolutely banal at times, and the characters are mostly stick figures. The climax of the film in particular is unbelievable, not because of the scepticism that is associated with the events, but because of the shabbiness in writing and ending it with hint of a sequel. The technical aspects are very much in sync with the general mood of the film, and there aren’t any surprises in store for us here either.

Analysis: The original Zanjeer (1973) was greatly inspired by Death Rides A Horse (1967) film. Zanjeer has inspired many films from that time. Seeing the success of the film Sr. NTR remade the film into Telugu titled Nippu lanti Manishi (1974), but even legendary actors (NTR & Satyanarayana) failed to reach the bench mark set by Amitabh & Pran in the Original. Similarly Thoofan never fleshes any of its characters out beyond the bare reductivism that they demand. The narration is nothing spectacular either. The predictability is something that works against it as each moment passes by, and at the end of it all, it almost feels like antediluvian.
