K.-BalachanderK. Balachander the legendary film director and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee was born in 1930 at Nannilam, in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. The director whose penchant for women-oriented subjects is known widely and the Ek Duje Ke Liye Rudra Veena and Achamillai Achamillai director is celebrating his 83rd birthday today.

Here, to mark his birthday we from Cinetara want to pay a wordy tribute to the most respected film personalities of our times.

KB Sir as he is fondly called by film brethren Iyakkunar Sigaram Balachander takes the credit of introducing stalwart actors including Kamal Haasan, Rajnikanth, Saritha, Sujatha, Suhasini, Prakash Raj and a big list of directors, technicians to the world of cinema.

The Padma Shri awardee has a strong inkling for female protagonists stories and that too a strong heroine at that. Anthuleni Kadha (Aval Oru Thodarkadhai in Tamil) was known for the path-breaking story and screenplays. The protagonist of the movie was a hard-working woman struggling to shoulder the responsibility of an ungrateful family and her tough stern exterior persona keeps her soft heart non-revealing through the end.

The movie became a trend setter for the dialogues and path breaking story. Ever since the movie, women of south drew recognition as tough women. The songs were a huge hit too including Devude Icchadu to name but one. It was remade in other languages including Malayalam, Bengali and Hindi.

His contribution to cinema is very well known, but his contribution to the stage is less known, and his contribution to the small screen is incredible and speaks tons of his passion for the art!

No one is more eligible for Dada Saheb Phalke award more than the great thespian and it’s unjust that the award was conferred on him little. He continues to be great mentor displaying amazing eye for talent and continues to be a socially responsible person. Every movie he helmed gave a strong message to the society. During those days (mid seventies) he was looked up as the most unconventional director.

Some of KB sir’s other masterpieces include:
